Building the future
5 October is a day to celebrate teachers and the central role they play in guiding children, youths & adults through the life-long learning process. This year, World Teachers’ Day will focus on the role of teachers within the context of the global financial and economic crisis and the need to invest in teachers now as a means to secure post-crisis regeneration.
It is critical, during these difficult times, to seek mechanisms that protect the teaching profession. It is also crucial, despite the crisis, to ensure that investment in teachers is sufficient and proportionate to the demands made upon them. It is the teaching force with its knowledge, experience and foresight which can bring new insights to global solutions.

Viktigt i dessa tider av kris är att komma ihåg vad och vilka som är vår framtid! Barnen, som alla måste få en god utbildning, är de som har vår framtid i sin hand. Därför måste alla politiker och ledare världen runt förstå vikten av att satsa på utbildning trots ekonomisk kris. På Education Internationals hemsida (den organisation som alla organiserade lärare världen över tillhör)kan man läsa om situationen i Latinamerika där flera länder skär ned i budgeten för skolan (se länk), precis som här hemma i Sverige. Skillnaden är bara att i Sverige får alla barn gå i skolan och i t ex Brasilien var det 2007 ca 600 000 barn som inte gick i skolan enligt UNESCO's rapport Education for all. I Peru har man fryst lärarlönerna trots att priserna har dubblats och i vissa fall tredubblats.
På G20-mötet i Pittsburgh fanns Education International med och fick gehör för sina åsikter om att investering och utveckling av utbildning är grunden för en hållbar återhämtning från finanskrisen. På sås vis stärktes arbetet för Education for all - det milleniemål som ska vara uppnått 2015 (alla barn ska gå i skolan).
