Efter 25 år som fackligt engagerad med livet som insats
Efter att ha deltagit i Genéveskolan 2009 och då 2010 har gjort sitt intåg så brukar jag alltid göra en summering av mina upplevelser. Medan jag satt där och gick igenom foton tagna under ILOkonferensen så kom jag att undra över hur det har gått för denna otroligt engagerade man: Jan Sithole. I Times of Swaziland den 12 oktober 2009 kunde man läsa följande (läs också kommentarerna längst ner som intygar hans långa engagemang!):

MATSAPHA – After leading the Swaziland Federation of Trade Unions (SFTU) for 25 years, Jan Sithole yesterday stepped down as Secretary General of the country’s union mother-body.
However, he continues to be a member of the organisation he has helped build since 1984.
Sithole has been replaced by Mduduzi Gina, who beat former Deputy Secretary General Archie Sayed by a landslide margin after tense moments of a voting process conducted through a secret ballot.
The elections, which were monitored by the Council of Swaziland Churches, took place on the third and final day of the 7th SFTU Delegates Congress held at Esibayeni Lodge and attended by 13 affiliates of the organisation.
During the elections, Gina and Sayed were the only persons nominated for the Secretary General’s position, while Sithole did not stand.
After the voting process had been concluded, the auditorium erupted into song and dance as Gina was announced winner with 70 votes against Sayed’s paltry 30.
Acknowledged
Gina, in his maiden speech as Secretary General, acknowledged the role played by his predecessor and appealed to the over 100 delegates for protection of the organisation’s integrity.
“The debates and interrogations witnessed here since the congress began on Friday were a sign that all of you have the best interests of the federation at heart,” Gina said.
He told the delegates that the continued existence of the organisation lay squarely on their shoulders and not his sole responsibility.
“I grew up within the structures of unionism as I joined the workers struggle, while still a young man. I’ve always been a dedicated activist and shall continue to safeguard the interests of the federation,” the new Secretary General said.
In an interview with Sithole, the outgoing leader said Gina was one of the brilliant emerging leaders of the SFTU and assured everyone that “the organisation is in the right hands”.
Serving
Gina has been serving as Second Deputy Secretary of the SFTU for the past four years and has been Secretary General of the Swaziland Processing Refining and Allied Workers Union (SPRAWU).
He is also the Swaziland National Provident Fund’s current Chairman of the Board of Directors.
Extra-ordinary Congress for SFTU coming
MATSAPHA – The Swaziland Federation of Trade Unions will hold an extra-ordinary congress in the next few months.
This was one of the resolutions taken at the end of the organisation’s 7th Delegates Congress yesterday afternoon.
The newly-elected national executive committee of the organisation has been given this congress as its first assignment.
“We need to prepare for the extra-ordinary congress and the new executive committee has to start preparations for the event as soon as possible,” new president Barnes Dlamini said.
Dlamini reminded the new committee that leadership was a sacrifice and there was a lot of sacrificing that they had to do.
The agenda, date and other logistics of the congress could not be divulged by the president.
Barnes is new SFTU president
MATSAPHA – Barnes Dlamini was yesterday elected new president of the Swaziland Federation of Trade Unions.
Dlamini takes over from Simon Shongwe who reportedly withdrew from the race after numerous consultations and lobbying.
Dlamini and Shongwe were the only persons who had shown interest in the position.
“Shongwe wanted to retain his position and at the beginning of the congress he had indicated that he would stand for the elections. However, he withdrew at the last minute, thereby handing unopposed victory to Barnes,” a source within the National Executive said.
Barnes had served as Deputy President in the previous National Executive and was also at the forefront of the Swaziland United Democratic Front (SUDF).

Dear Jan... Greetings from Canada ! I have fond memories of you as a student at Mankayane. I have followed your career from a distance. In 2000 we visited Swaziland and connected with a few former students but were unable to locate you. I recall your enthusiasm for drama and table tennis. I trust you continue to follow the God First motto of good old Mamkayane High. An "old"Tishela Frank Berry

Thanks Jan, you have made your mark since coming from your youthful years at Mankayane High School in the 70's. You played your role very well and it was time to let go and a young blood come in. Hope you guys will help the workers realize that they are the owners of the economy not the Royals. The workers mustn't be exploited by either the capitalist or the Royals. It's bad taste when few enjoy 2/3 of the economy at the expense of the majority!! Phambili ngo'Mkhonto wekulwa neyi mbungulu nama gundane!! As COSATU here in Gauteng we are behind your struggle 110%.

Jag hoppas verkligen att den nya ordföranden har samma engagemang som Jan har haft och att han fortsätter att arbeta för folket och de mänskliga rättigheterna! I Jans fotspår (hoppas bara att han slipper trakasserier och mordhot)!

Jul - Navidad - Christmas - Noël
It's not Christmas for all of us and maybe it is time to think about the Christmas spirit when reading this from INTERNATIONAL TRADE UNION CONFEDERATION (ITUC) homepage:
"SITRAPETEN members assaulted and dislodged
Brussels, 18 December 2009 (ITUC OnLine): On 10 December, 250 heavily
armed state security force officers dislodged 25 members of SITRAPETEN,
along with MSICG political council members and a number of journalists,
to free the area to set up the stage for a concert to be held as part of
"La Academia" television series produced by the Mexican television
station TV Azteca.
The security officers surged against the trade unionists, beating them
with truncheons and sprayed a strong irritant directly onto their faces.
The product blinded them for a time and continued to affect their skin
for over twenty four hours. Throughout the incident, officers from the
National Civil Police filmed the workers, together with those of other
nationalities who had joined with them in solidarity.
The security forces then went on to destroy the place they had been
living in for over a year. The workers have been on the street since
their employer, Agua Pura Salvavidas, unfairly dismissed them when they
formed a union. Despite a court ruling in their favour, ordering the
workers' immediate reinstatement and recognition of the trade union,
their situation remains unchanged. The Castillo Hnos company owners have
ignored the rulings, spurred by the indifference shown by the Guatemalan
authorities, particularly the Labour Ministry and the General Labour
Inspectorate."
Let's send our collegues in Guatemala a thought of solidarity in this difficult situation and hope that the union work will soon be implemented in every country as being a normal part of every day's working habit.

Funderingar kring att vara en inspirerande lärare
Sitter och rättar mina sista prov för terminen, trots att det är lördag kväll. Det gjorde jag även igår kväll, trots att det var fredag kväll... I vanliga fall är jag allergisk mot att arbeta mer än vad min arbetsgivare har betalt mig för, speciellt under helgen, men nu är det snart slut på terminen, på måndag ska betygen vara satta och den här veckan har jag helt enkelt inte hunnit med! Inte för att jag har varit borta på fackligt uppdrag, som så många gånger annars, utan för att jag denna vecka har spenderat tre hela dagar med en underbar klass som arbetade med sitt filmprojekt. Jag har fått se deras kreativa sida, deras samarbete och organisationsförmågor samt deras ansvarstagande i ett gemensamt projekt! Mycket nyttigt och inspirerande, både för eleverna och för mig som lärare.
Detta har i sin tur medfört en hel del extra arbete för mig och därför sitter jag nu, i en paus i rättandet, och bloggar om företeelsen...
Har precis läst på Lärarförbundets hemsida om alla inspirerande lärare som nobelpristagare har haft genom åren, för visst är det så att allt börjar med en lärare? Venkatraman Ramakrishnan och Ada Yonath, årets pristagare i kemi, berättar båda om sina lärare som har inspirerat dem till att arbeta vidare mot det som nu har berättigat dem till ett nobelpris i kemi. Men då kommer jag ohejdat att tänka på alla mina trötta kollegor, på mig själv och på den debatt som pågår i samhället kring om en höjd lön ger bättre lärare... Om mer resurser till skolan ger bättre lärare...
Varför är vi trötta? Vi som i vanliga fall pratar passionerat om våra ämnen oavsett om det handlar om grammatik, Tysklands intåg i Polen, Monets inflytande i konsthistorian, franskans inflytande i svenska språket eller hur eleverna ska tillgodogöra sig kunskaper på ett bättre och mer "för livet" sätt? Vi som lever för att våra barn och ungdomar ska få ett bättre liv, ett tryggare liv, ett bättre självförtroende och en "plats" i samhället som de kan känna är bara deras som de själva styr över med kunnande och självinsikt...
Vad har hänt oss passionerade barn- och ungdomsguider i livets lära? Jo, frustrationen över att inte hinna med lilla "Kalle" som inte har stöd med läxorna hemma och som dessutom är mobbad i skolan eller "Lisa" som är deprimerad och vill prata men som jag inte hinner hjälpa så mycket som jag skulle vilja för att jag måste springa till nästa lektion som börjar om fem minuter.... Puh! Verkligheten börjar komma ikapp oss i den redan så kapade verksamheten som fortfarande kallas skola men som ibland liknar något helt annat..
Vi lärare ska ta hand om uppgifter vi inte har utbildning för, därför att kommunen har "sparat" på skolpsykologtjänsten eller kuratorstjänsten... Syven (studie- och yrkesvägledaren) finns bara på skolan varannan vecka och skolsyster har fem andra skolor att sköta om.... Städerskorna får inte sköta om en skola utan ska hinna med fem olika, vaktmästarna har numer ett ambulerande arbete på fem till åtta skolor, så vi ska bland annat bära ut allt skräp själva mellan lektionerna till soprummet ute på gården. Detta är resultatet av den verksamhet som det sedan nittiotalet har skurits i oräknade gånger.
Själv känner jag att jag vill ha jullov för att vila up mig för att sedan i vår orka ge järnet för mina klasser så att de ska få det allra bästa av mig och de kunskaper jag kan hjälpa dem att skaffa. Jag vill (orka) vara en inspirerande lärare!
Sitter just nu och klurar på hur jag ska kunna få eleverna att tro så mycket på sig själva att de vågar visa alla de kunskaper de visar mig att de har skriftligt, i hör- och läsförståelse samt även i grammatiska kunskaper, när de pratar... Ett viktigt beslut
Idag kom så äntligen ett viktigt beslut från vår skolminister. Nämligen beslutet att inte förkorta förskollärarutbildningen!Det räcker att man i Bolognaprocessen bestämde sig för att förskolelärare inte ska ha rätten att forska genom sin utbildning som andra lärare har. Hur kan man säga att de som är specialister på sitt område inte ska få forska om det? Skulle en gynekolog forska om elektronik? Knappast! Men när det kommer till skolan så är det tyärr andra personer än lärare som forskar.... Precis som vem som hels,t utan utbildning, kan vikariera när en lärare är sjuk eller borta av annan anledning. Skulle det falla en gynekolog in att vikariera för en kirurg? "Ursäkta, men kirurgen är sjuk idag så att jag ska operera bort dina halsmandlar"... Eller skulle rörmokaren installera elen om elektrikern är sjuk? Är det undra på att lärares status inte existerar? När utbildningen inte värdesätts utan vem som helst kan ersätta oss?
Självklart finns det många outbildade som är jätteduktiga, men om de nu är det utan utbildning hur duktiga skulle de inte vara med utbildning? Stjärnpedagoger, rent av!!
För visst vill vi ha det allra bästa till våra barn och deras framtid?

Ett svårt val
Att få den fackliga verksamheten att gå ihop med den fackliga verksamheten är ibland mycket svårt när man är lärare. Kanske är det svårt inom andra yrken också, men jag tror att just lärare slits mellan sitt engagemang för yrket och för sina elever.
Själv tycker jag att det är otroligt viktigt att eleverna får en kontinuitet i sin undervisning samtidigt som det fackliga måste ha eldsjälar som orkar föra "kampen" vidare.
För just nu är det en kamp! Hörde på radion idag att de nya reglerna för a-kassan och sjukförsäkringen medför att personer som är så svårt sjuka i t ex cancer att de inte ens komemr att överleva tvingas söka jobb idag med de nya reglerna. Som om det inte vore nog att de är så sjuka att de kommer att dö inom en snar framtid.
Vart har ordet solidaritet tagit vägen? Ska vi tvinga svårt sjuka att slåss om jobben medan friska, unga människor som vill arbeta inte får något jobb för att det inte finns några att få? "Hungriga vargar jagar bättre"...
Om de som är fackligt engagerade inte får förutsättningar för att utföra sitt fackliga arbete, vad händer då med sjukförsäkringen? Eller a-kassan? Eller med LAS? Ska vi ha fler företag som avskedar människor pga arbetsbrist och sedan anlitar ett bemanningsföretag (där kanske rent utav samma människa som blev avskedad har fått jobb) för att ta in folk när de behöver? Utan att tvingas anställa?
Hur ska vi ha det????

Vart har ordet solidaritet tagit vägen? Ska vi tvinga svårt sjuka att slåss om jobben medan friska, unga människor som vill arbeta inte får något jobb för att det inte finns några att få? "Hungriga vargar jagar bättre"...
Om de som är fackligt engagerade inte får förutsättningar för att utföra sitt fackliga arbete, vad händer då med sjukförsäkringen? Eller a-kassan? Eller med LAS? Ska vi ha fler företag som avskedar människor pga arbetsbrist och sedan anlitar ett bemanningsföretag (där kanske rent utav samma människa som blev avskedad har fått jobb) för att ta in folk när de behöver? Utan att tvingas anställa?
Hur ska vi ha det????
